DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Dedham residents hit the dance floor this week to learn how to line dance.
Paul Hughes of Ballroom Basics hosts the weekly classes as a way to teach the dance style but also promote physical and mental wellbeing. Line dancing is a form of dance that involves a group of people lining up in rows doing repeated choreographed dance moves.
Hughes said while teaching line dancing can be hard, he enjoys giving people the chance to have a good time.
"There's probably like 70 plus basic line dance steps," he said. "Imagine being able to get 40 people to do something synchronized all at the same time."
Hughes said he hosts the line dancing lessons because it gives people the opportunity to improve things like their memory skills and balance while also relieving stress and being a great form of exercise.
His students, who got to dance to all sorts of genres of music during the lesson, agreed. Several dancers highlighted socialization and the exercise as their favorite parts of the lessons. One dancer said line dancing is a great exercise for her because it is low impact.
"I had back surgery decades ago," she said. "Nothing hurts when I do this. We loved it."
Hughes hosts the classes in a building near the post office in Dedham Square from 3 to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
